Fluttering around doing markets gives me an opportunity to do some of my own Christmas shopping and I've managed to pick up some beautiful stuff! There are also some amazing things I've put on my Christmas list, including one of these beautiful necklaces from Petal Meg! Have to save up a bit, but hey are gorgeous and she is appearing weekly at the Suzuki night markets.

http://www.petalmeg.com/

I got some of these beautiful candles at the Sisters Markets on Saturday to hand out to teachers and all those that make my life easier to manage!

Kajita Candles

On Tuesday night we are appearing at the Wales Street Primary School, doing a Christmas fundraiser, so will see what else I can pick up!

I was happy to see Justine from Mixtape on Saturday at the Sisters Market. The new mixtape zine format looks cool!

It's all about the angle!

I'm laughing at the quote in the Age today of me being quoted as being a money hungry thug!!! :)

http://www.theage.com.au/national/melbourne-life/to-market-to-market-20091125-jruf.html

For the record I just want to say, that 'lucrative' is a word with subjective levels of interpretation and in market terms, 'lucrative' may not be what normal people consider! Lets just say, I classify minimum wage as 'lucrative'!

What do you think? Do you think people will flock to our obvious success, or be turned off by our gloating money-hunger! LOL!

I love, love, love these bathers...

A friend of mine last year put me on to this product for my two girls. They are brilliantly made, original, Australian made bathers and my eldest absolutely loved hers.

Recycling plastic bags and christmas bibs

I have been testing out a few new product ideas, and one is this purse/pencil case using plastic bags. I have melted the bags together (about four layers) and then sewn as normal fabric. I am hoping to have these available for sale at the upcoming Queen Victoria Suzuki Night Markets which begin on 25th November.

I have also been doing some Christmas bibs, which are super cute, very absorbent and bright, happy and colourful! The babies are sure to look super cute in these on Christmas day! I love the beautiful contrast of bright red and muted green. The flannette I've used for the back of the bibs also makes me think of spiky Christmas pine trees. We'll have them for sale at the Esplanade market as well as the night markets for $15 each or 2 for $25. I'm also giving a pile to Chris' Dial A Nappy at 205a Victoria Road, Northcote.

Girls Night In

I got a lovely email from Karen Wasson the other day, letting us know that the 'Girls Night In' we donated a bag to was a big success and they raised over $1000!
We have also just supplied new stock to Autumn Retreat, on Miller Street, Thornbury, Melbourne. So if you're in the vicinity, go have a look!

Betty Jo butterfly's

A visit to Spensley Street Fete yesterday resulted in a beautiful, exciting, bargain Betty Jo buy!!! I'm chuffed at my purchase and what a bargain at only $12.00@!!!
The craft stall had some really interesting stuff, but this was definitely the highlight.
I also picked up some bargain plants... the veggie garden is now coming along nicely, with celery, basil, corn, parsley, leeks, tomatos... and more! I must say, fetes must be the best place to buy plants. I got a tonne of stuff for only $7.50. I feel like I was a thrifty thing yesterday :)

As far as Fat Mumma's goes, we just got accepted to the inaugral Sunday Sessions at the Queen Victoria Markets, which start on the 1st November. There are going to be one every month during the summer. I will be taking some end of line designs to sell off... so it could be a place to come and find a bargain.

Have bibs and dresses ready to be sewn... this week! I promise!

School fetes, craft and monsters...

I've had lots of busy fun making craft stall contributions for the school fete this week. Along with a few other bits and bobs, I came up with these very cute little monster badges which I've had heaps of fun putting together. I really like thinking up the personality to go with each one! My eldest daughter likes the red gangster (third on top row), I love the mummy at the beginning of the second line and my youngest loves the belly full of love (third on third line).

What's your favourite???

They will be available to buy at the craft stall, Westgarth Primary School Fete, Sunday 18th October, 10am to 4pm!

Saturday Sisters Market

I have a lovely day at the Sisters Market on Saturday. Had some lovely neighbours, Chucklesand we inspired by lots of lovely things. I always love the t-shirts of Little Red Duck, and was soooo tempted to spend more money on Saki pants... which I also adore!

However, I was good. I managed to get away with some sock monkeys and a sock pirate for my visiting nephew!

I was also put on to the Northside Makers, non-for-profit organisation, which looks really cool and is cheap enough to join to make it something I think I'll do this week :).

Here are my sock monkeys... partying out!

Farters Day...

This morning the joke of the house was that it wasn't really 'Fathers' Day', it was actually Farters Day and that meant everyone had to fart all day!!! Oh the joys of having children... the little giggles on a Sunday morning keep me sane (amazingly enough!).

Fathers Day was actually celebrated with some fantastic hand-made banner creations by the kids, which were great and they took great pride in displaying them to their dad very early this morning. I'm sure he would have preferred a lie in, but he was suitably impressed :)

It's always nice to find websites that are promoting ethical, Australian made products and here is one of them: Discount Talk. Of course it helps me to support them because they have a feature on us!!! Thanks Geoff!

It's a busy week here in Fat Mumma's land this week. I feel the pressure of Christmas starting to mount in the air. We have a couple of possible new customers: Autumn Retreat (Miller Street, West Preston) just filled up for Christmas; Pepperberry Wares (Canterbury) is about to put in an order for mini bags and Nest Nappies in Queensland has put in an order too. Exciting!

So, best get to work then!!!

Immortality without toilet cleaning.

I have just finished the fourth Twilight book, which has had me enthralled enough to forget about social media for a few weeks!!! I know it's not the most intellectually challenging of books, and if considering the position of women in society certainly isn't full of strong female role models... but I was wondering to myself yesterday while cleaning the toilet, 'what is it that I really like about it?'. Well the answer came as I sniffled and stared blankly down the brown, encrusted u-bend.... THEY don't have to clean toilets do they???? This ideal life of laying around, staring in to each other eyes while pondering the pros and cons of immortality!!!! I'd want to live forever too if I never had to cook another meal, deal with another childs whinge or clean another bathroom!!!!

On a better note... Fat Mumma's is supporting an incredible challenge by
http://www.alice2antarctica.com/ to raise funds for indigenous health in Australia. If you get the chance to support in some way, every little bit will help!

Love, peace and immortality without toilet cleaning!

TO MARKET to market TO MARKET we go... again!

So, I have managed to get away with staying indoors for the past three months... but as spring approaches it is time to dust off the market gear and get myself revved up!!! It's not a bad start as tomorrow I'm at Fed Square... nice coffee, hot food, possibly music, and I'll be almost infront of the NGV bookshop, so if boredom sets in I can even go for a browse!!

Should be a good day. If you get chance come and say hi!

Great to see a dad blogging too!!

I realised today that I don't actually link to any men! So, in making an effort to stand by my aim to be non-gender specific... I have found a very amusing dad blogging site which I point you all to! Check out, reservoirdad.blogspot.com for some insights in to the world of a stay-at-home dad; which are actually not that rare these days... I'm happy to say!

In the same vein I was discussing the sad case for children friendly male toilets with another stay-at-home dad friend of mine. I realised I have never thought about some of the simple problems dads face in our supposed 'dad-friendly' society! He was telling me how it's really hard to find clean male toilets that he can take his daughter to when he is out and about. Most male toilets also don't have a baby change table, unlike most female toilets... my little mind finds this very interesting! As much as we may try to move away from our gender stereotypes, there are still these simple societal pressures that keep our mindset stuck in female, male roles!

Anyway, enough of my diarrhea about toilets... on to much nicer news...

This SUNDAY 16TH AUGUST Fat Mumma's will be the the LifeStyle Market, showcasing Victorian Small Businesses, as Federation Square, Melbourne City, between 12pm and 4pm. I have new coin purses for sale and will also be handing out lots of info about is... and hopefully some show bags (although I have yet to get myself in gear to organise this!

Sleep tight...

Here is someone crying out for one of our t-shirts!!!

http://tinyurl.com/mg3nrz

I read this article today and thought... this is some one who needs a Fat Mumma's t-shirt in the childs collection!!! It also made me realise I'm not the only one with tv trauma's.

My current obsession is healthy eating for the kids, so I am looking forward to going to a seminar on Saturday Afternoon by Kim Bishop.. www.yu.net.au. Haven't thought of a t-shirt though... any thoughts anyone???? Maybe a starter could be "Fast Food Junkie"? Would you buy it? LOL! Probably more sellable would be "My mum wants me to be Healthy, Wealthy and Wise"!

Also went to the Handmade in Melbourne launch last night! It was huge!!!! Great to be there with good friends (Betty Jo and Klei), and spotted lots of other crafters... but only from a distance. It was soooo hot in there at one stage we all thought we were going to faint, but I feel really special to be a part of the project, so thank you Slattery Media for putting it together. The hand-made scene definitely needs a good boost everyone now and again!

Gotta get that rhythm back....

Oooo, after a week of holidays and being completely out of range for all forms of communication... I am finding it hard to find my rhythm today! However, had a brilliant time watching crocodiles and enjoying life in the Northern Territory. I would describe it hesitantly as paradise for white, middle-class types like myself.... but I couldn't help feeling a sense of unease at the cultural divide between aboriginal and middle-class whites! I really wish there was a solution to the problems up there, but I don't think anyone really knows where to start! Throwing money at the problem seems to be the only solution they have come up with so far!

We did the full-on touristy thing with a campervan through Litchfield Park. It was fabulous! Soooo nice to be out in the bush. It truly is the best place to go for relaxing... forget yoga classes for a year... just park yourself in the bush for week and listen to the sound of the wilderness (and the britz vans generators!!!).

Anyway, I am on a mission to create this week... so stay tuned. We also have the launch of the Handmade book this week. I will post our page as soon as I've seen it!

Barbie, barbie, lets go party....

I couldn't get that crappy Barbie song out of my head as I wandered around the Barbie 50th Anniversary exhibition at Fed Square today. That was annoying, but surprisingly, even with 4 young girls in tow, I quite enjoyed it. It was interesting not only from a fashion designer perspective (which I have to admit never having really thought about there being a fashion designer behind every Barbie outfit!), but also from a visual merchandising view; and a brand marketing point of view. All this, AND it kept the girls entertained for an hour or so.....!!!!

We also did a sock puppet making workshop at Artplay, which was a recycled, craft, creative art-experience, which I feel balanced the materialistic, capitalistic, egotistic, self-indulgence of the Barbie exhibition. I reckon that's as good as 'carbon-neutural'??? Don't you think there should be a 'capitalistic-neutral' facebook group somewhere??? Maybe that should by the by-line for the melbourne craft cartel?????

Also read Betty Jo's blog and realised she is in Handmade in Melbourne too.... beaut!!!!

Handmade in Melbourne

Yay, we got in the new Handmade in Melbourne book! We are pretty excited about that... our first book feature! Wow, I almost feel like a proper artisan... even though my day has actually been spent entertaining half-a-dozen children. We did a round of t-shirt stenciling, so I suppose that justifies my artisan day... LOL!!

The discipline of web browsing

I have decided that when updating the blog, I have to give myself no more than 1 hour to get stuck meandering down the pathways and corridors of the internet. It is so rife with beautiful products, stories and creative brilliance that it is soooo hard not to spend all afternoon just looking around.

Today I found this dress: http://www.thegrandsocial.com.au/secret-squirrel/dresses/kimono-dress, which I think is beautiful and wish I had the legs to carry it off! My friend Barbara at klei, would look gorgeous in it.... They are also doing a range of clothing themselves which I am hoping to get down to check out at the Rose Street Market.

News on the market grapevine is that Rose Street will be soon starting a Sunday market too and that the AGM took place at St Kilda yesterday with the election of a new committee. Also the Sisters Market are doing a 'teeny tiny' market on 7th November for all things baby. We will be there in October and December.

By the way, I have to say that the background paintings in my recent youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1sLxOVsd2A) are by my favourite artist Carey Potter who you can find here: http://www.mmorphe.com/careypotter/index.html.

Have a nice day... time to leave the corridors of creativity and go do some sewing!

School Holidays...

Just got back from the Fun for Kids festival in Warrnambool, which I have to say was fantastic!!! There was a heaps for the kids to do AND loads and load of great craft projects! I particularly liked the make a cupcake biscuit stall, as well as the badge making section. Of course I made my eldest an 'I Love Mum' badge for presentation after she completed the rock-climbing wall!!! Very tongue in cheek of course! She wore it with pride though!!!! :)

I think next year, rather than doing a long day, we might do three days where we go for a few hours and try and check out some of the other great stuff around Warrnambool. I didn't realise there was that much to do around there, but it's actually not a bad place (barring the weather!). The great thing was the festival was all undercover, so there was no need to have to battle the wind and rain! The caravan we stayed in did feel like it was going to lift off in to space at various points... but we managed to return safe and sound!

Only another week to go before school goes back....!!!!!

Other Handmade Wonders...

I was just reading Betty Jo's linoforestblog and remembered that the Northcote Winter Artisan market was on this weekend. The weather was miserable, but it sounds like there was some beautiful stuff there. Here are some of the links that I followed and loved: Finki
curlypops,Polly Pratt.

I am particularly inspired to try the freezer paper stencilling, but just keep wondering what on earth 'freezer paper' is? Will have to look out for it at the supermarket. I usually use powerpoint slide plastic for my stencils. That way you can wash it and reuse it. Stick it on with masking tape. It's a bit harder to cut through than card or paper, but the fact that you can use it a number of time makes up for it.

I had considered applying for the Northcote market, but just couldn't bring myself to stand out in the freezing cold and then have to come home and give a babysitter my take for the day! There are many times I have actually ended up paying more money out than I have made... can you believe the craziness of PAYING to stand in the freezing cold and wet all day????? Crafting is madness you realise!

Being caught up in oneself...

I realise to day, as always, that's it's really very hard to know what's going on in other people's lives. I think the world of blogs and twitter kind of sums it up that we have fleeting comments to each other, and short conversations and often things are missed. In the past week, I have been surprised to hear that friends are getting divorced, that family has lost some of their closest friends, that neighbours have been diagnosed with cancer for a second time and that others are contending with parents who've had strokes. All of these events go on without me even realising. Is this a symptom of our social networking that we learn to communicate only in soundbites.... a friend even got married on the weekend, and I was completely unawares. Someone will have a baby tomorrow and I'll be like... 'wow... I didn't even realise you were pregnant'!

I'm not saying I don't think highly of all of these people, and that I remain close to them in all sorts of ways... but it merely highlights that the larger our social network, the less time we have to spread ourselves around! It's a tough one, as it's fun to have heaps of friends... but does that make me a bad friend to show small bouts of attention to lots of friends, rather than lots of attention to a select few?

The answer of course is, 'I'm doing the best I can'... but I just want all those that are suffering to know... I'm thinking of you!

If you had one wish...

Was just reading a profile of someone on twitter that said... "I like to dance to Miley Cyrus and go on vacation". I pictured a scene where someone was granted one wish and that their one wish was to do that all day everyday for the rest of their lives. Wonder if that person would feel the same way about liking it?

This made me ponder on what I liked to do as a teenager and if I had been granted a wish like that what kind of purgatory would I be stuck in? "I like to dance to The Smiths and sit in my room contemplating suicide".... thank god I never got a wish fairy for that one!!!!

On a brighter note, I discovered a new colour today which is called "Cheesy Grin". What a great name for a yellow!

The weather brings us all down...

It's lovely to have the rain falling... watering the gardens and filling the rainwater tanks... but by gum it's brings everyone crashing down doesn't it? I really feel that running a small hand-made business from home is hard enough to stay on top of things without having a freezing cold office to work in as well!!!!

The good thing is we have holiday season almost upon us... so lets hope we manage to sneak in a few hot sunny days somewhere to break up the sunless monotony! :)

The sick children don't help either...

I did however find the motivation to finally update the shop today. The new backpack photos are now up http://tinyurl.com/l5llff. Just have to do the mini bags, day bags and zip-up-shoulder bags (before we change the design again!).

School fundraising and not forgetting the 'FUN'!

If you have been following me on Twitter you will have seen some cryptic messages about 'Joan Jett' and 'I love Rock n Roll'. Well, my singing lessons finally came to a climax last week at our school fundraising night. The Idol, is something that has been running for the past three or four years at my daughters school and it's a great fundraising initiative that I have to spread the word about!

If you are looking for fundraising ideas or thinking of organising something similar let me give you the basic rundown:

The night was organised by parents from school who are musicians and were willing to practice a couple of times with each group wanting to put themselves out there for ridicule. The basic format was Intro, Trivia, 3 X Idol contestants; then interlude, then two more sets of the same (three in total with 9 budding idol groups).

The fundraising element came from selling tickets for tables of people, enticed by the trivia as well as the Idols. Also, at the back of the room were 9 tins, all representing an act and donations were encouraged to be placed in them. This then raised money and the highest amount won the Idol trophy (which was a gold sprayed microphone).

There was a trophy for the trivia winners and a disco for those that wanted to hang around afterwards for an hour!

So, the basic format is quite simple, but it does involve some very enthusiastic organisers and supporters. If you are interested in more details, comment on the blog and I'll respond with answers :)

Inspired by Georgia Chapman

I had a moment of inspiration yesterday after reading an article in the age about textile designer and VIXEN proprietor Georgia Chapman. I had been thinking about artwork to put above the piano in the dining room, and suddenly it came to me! So, I got out a pencil, sketched out this beautiful flower in my sketch book and then redrew it on the wall. Add some black acrylic paint and a very steady hand (amazingly) and I ended up with this:

I'm enjoying looking at it and am now thinking about what other things I can transpose it on to!

Metallic Blue Cat print on pants.

Have finally managed to finish these pants that have been sitting around waiting for me to change my overlocker thread to black. Sometimes, you just keep telling yourself, I'll just finish this white thread job, before I change over... and then it finally happens! They look pretty cute and I think I might try making some to sell at the market - especially now I've changed the overlocker thread. May as well make the most of it! If anyone is interested in some, let me know.

I have also made bibs and cut-out more blackbird dresses today, so I'm feeling productive. However, I am also feeling sick from all the chocolate I've eaten. I think I'm going to fall in to a depressed heap any second. The gym was loving me last week... but this week I just want to become a couch potato, and Lindt chocolate rabbits aren't helping!

Happy Easter everyone, whether you be a believer or not. As one of my atheist friends stated yesterday, 'How can you fail to follow anything that involves a giant invisible bunny delivery chocolate eggs!'. Profound! Thanks for that one Rob, it did make me laugh!

Also, we're about to be involved in this years Canterbury Art Exhibition! Well worth a visit if any of you get chance! http://www.canterburyart.com/

Gorgeous new hand-knitted cardigan

Had to show off my new cardigan from mum. Hand-knitted and real wool! Great colour, smells lovely and made me envious that she can knit so well... You see where my crafty talents originated!

Thanks mum :)

Rainy days indoors

Days like today (rainy and windy) remind me of my youth in England and make me realise why I got in to making things in the first place :). It's a great pacifier, putting a sewing project together when it's blowing a gale outside! Made a new dress for my eldest daughter (picture coming soon) that I may turn in to another FM range, for next summer! They are simple to make, but providing I find some groovy fabric I think they'd be a winner!

Off to the stitches and craft exhibition tomorrow, www.stitchesandcraft.com.au, as well as to Crown Promenade to eat lots of cake - fundraiser for the Cerebral Palsy network... www.melbourneslongestcake.org.au.

Love and peace,

FM xx

Forgot to say...

New dress and networking....

I made some new dresses today with my brand new overlocker.... I am feeling inspired and Fat Mumma's is definitely going to benefit! Have also built a new light-box to make sure I can take some great new product shots... so stay tuned to see this at work!

Also been caught up this week talking child-care! Wow, it's hard work getting my head around all the changes coming in terms of regulations, etc... Trust me to get involved on another committee!

Had a good networking session with the Aintree Group, Kew morning tea. Am hoping to get in touch with the businessmumsnetwork and try and get more traffic to the website!

I love the socialising... wouldn't it be great if I could build a business on that alone!!!! :)

A bird on the dress...

is as good as two in the bush...???
I don't know where I get these comments from, they are as abstract as my creative thought processes I suppose???
We've managed to create a new range of dresses (one of which is pictured). I am trying to put them up on the web, but currently don't seem to be able to make enough to keep up with demand :( Sorry. However, if you know anyone that wants one, we can make to order! Sizes 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 8 :). The bird pictured is one of the most popular, as well as a cat stencil, curiously looking at a snail. I really like the idea of 'curiosity killed the snail'! We are also looking at the idea of a skipping girl... which will hopefully be out soon.
Keep your eyes peeled for our new laptop pouches and wallets too! :) After a short holiday we are feeling inspired!
